We explored a number of news feed reader in earlier articles, some of them cmdline (e.g. canto, krill) and some with excellent GUIs. The most aesthetic news reader with an excellent GUI we came across would be Lightread. However, the project remains unmaintained for a long time now.
We have a new app which might fill in for Lightread. The features do not match exactly but there’s a common aspect – simplicity.
To begin with, Newsup is not for tech news and the channels are pre-defined. Newsup shows you world news as they appear in the source channels. At the time of writing it supports: BBC, Fox, CNN, India Today and Sky News. More channels are to come.
Installing Newsapp is a bit roundabout because of the two dependencies it has. As it turned out, we did not have any of those installed on the Ubuntu 14.04 rig we tried the app on. And one of the necessary packages is not available in the official repos either. The claim on the official webpage does not reflect these. Steps:
$ sudo apt-get install libwebkitgtk-1.0-0 $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8 $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install yad
Now download the Newsup installer package from the official repos for your architecture and run:
$ sudo dpkg -i newsup_version.deb
