More on Debian packages

ubuntu_apps_compOur earlier articles on Ubuntu package management explore ways to use deb packages efficiently. In this article we will walk through some useful apt and dpkg options to inspect a package closely.

  • Let’s start by checking if a package is installed or available in the repos.
    $ dpkg -l leafpad
    Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
    | Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
    |/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
    ||/ Name                            Version              Architecture         Description
