Useful tools on Ubuntu (U)

ubuntu_logo_81x81This post covers the utilities those start with U. Part of the series.

  1. udpcast (Utilities) : A file transfer tool that can send data simultaneously to many destinations on a LAN. This can for instance be used to install entire classrooms of PC’s at once. The advantage of UDPcast over using other methods (nfs, ftp, whatever) is that UDPcast uses UDP’s multicast abilities: it won’t take longer to install 15 machines than it would to install just 2.
  2. udptunnel (Networking) : Tunnel UDP data over a TCP channel to bypass firewalls which allow only TCP data to pass.
  3. ufraw (Graphics) : Utility to read and manipulate raw images from digital cameras.
  4. ufw (Networking) : Program for managing a netfilter firewall.
  5. uget (Networking) : Easy to use download manager written in GTK+.
  6. ukopp (System Administration) : Incrementally copy or back-up files to a disk or USB stick. It copies only new or modified files since the last backup, and is therefore quite fast.
  7. ultracopier (Utilities) : Graphical file copier that acts as a replacement for files copy dialogs. Main features include play/pause, speed limits, on-error resume.
  8. umbrello, umlet (Development) : UML modelling tool and code generator.
  9. umit (Networking) : The new nmap frontend, intended to be cross plataform, easy to use, fast and highly customizable.
  10. umockdev (Development) : Mocks Linux devices for creating integration tests for hardware related libraries and programs. It also provides tools to record the properties and behaviour of particular devices, and to run a program or test suite under a test bed with the previously recorded devices loaded.
  11. unar (Utilities) : Unarchiver or extractor for a variety of compression file formats.
  12. unburden-home-dir (Miscellaneous – Graphical) : allows users to move cache files from browsers, etc. off their home directory, i.e. on a local harddisk or tmpfs and replace them with a symbolic link to the new location (e.g. on /tmp/ or /scratch/) upon login.
  13. uncrustify (Development) : Source code beautifier for C / C++ / C# / D / Java / Pawn. It indents, adds newlines, aligns, etc, and is highly configurable.
  14. undertaker (Development) : A tool for static code analysis for code with C preprocessor directives, which can be used in various modes. The most prominent one checks every single preprocessor block within the file whether it can be selected or deselected, which in many cases is a great asset for code maintenance.
  15. undistract-me (Miscellaneous – Text Based) : Get a notification when any command finishes that took longer than ten seconds to finish.
  16. unetbootin (Utilities) : Installer of Linux/BSD distributions to a partition or USB drive.
  17. unhide (System Administration) : A forensic tool to find hidden processes and TCP/UDP ports by rootkits / LKMs or by another hidden technique.
  18. unhtml (Word Processing) : Remove the markup tags from an HTML file.
  19. uni2ascii (Word Processing) : UTF-8 to 7-bit ASCII and vice versa converter.
  20. unison (Networking) : File-synchronization tool for Unix and Windows. It allows two replicas of a collection of files and directories to be stored on different hosts (or different disks on the same host), modified separately, and then brought up to date by propagating the changes in each replica to the other.
  21. units (Utilities) : Converts between different systems of units.
  22. universalindentgui (Development) : GUI frontend for several code beautifiers.
  23. unp (Utilities) : unpack (almost) everything with one command.
  24. unrar (Utilities) : Unarchiver for .rar files.
  25. unworkable (Networking) : A single threaded and asynchronous BitTorrent implementation, written in portable ANSI C using libevent and mmap() for performance.
  26. unzip (Utilities) : Unarchiver for .zip files.
  27. upx-ucl (Utilities) : Free, portable, extendable, high-performance executable packer for several executable formats.
  28. urlscan (E-mail) : A small program that is designed to integrate with the “mutt” mailreader to allow you to easily launch a Web browser for URLs contained in email messages. It is a replacement for the “urlview” program.
  29. urlwatch (World Wide Web) : Tool for monitoring webpages for updates.
  30. usbip (System Administration) : USB device sharing system over IP network.
  31. userinfo (System Administration) : A console utility to display a variety of information about a local user. It uses loadable modules to perform different tasks which separate the output with a field deliminator.
  32. ushare (Development) : A UPnP (TM) A/V & DLNA Media Server. It implements the server component that provides UPnP media devices with information on available multimedia files. uShare uses the built-in http server of libupnp to stream the files to clients.
  33. uzbl (Networking) : Lightweight Webkit browser following the UNIX philosophy.
