Qtile: hackable tiling window manager in Python

We explored xmonad in one of our earlier articles. Qtile is another tiling window manager which programmers would love to use. One of its powerful features is extensibility. For example, you can have your own key bindings defined for every key and override the default ones. That is, of course, if you are comfortable with Python. Some more benefits of using a window manager like Qtile:

  • Take control of your desktop and optimize it to work your way
  • Efficiently use the screen by making every corner of it useful
  • Use the keyboard more than the mouse
  • Qtile is extensible, Write widgets, layout or define new commands
  • Free and open source. So you can contribute back your mods

Qtile supports several Linux distros. To install on Ubuntu:

$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:tycho-s/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install qtile

Some other window managers for devs: i3spectrwm, awm
