Try Budgie Desktop on Ubuntu

Budgie is the default desktop environment on Evolve OS (now Solus OS). Beautiful as it is, it is also lightweight. Evolve OS is still in its early days and so is the desktop environment. Because of the inherent modular structure of Linux distros, you can still install and test Budgie on Ubuntu Trusty. The Evolve OS team has set up a dedicated PPA for Ubuntu users to try Budgie. In addition, the lead developer has his own PPA with the latest updates.

Budgie is written in GTK and either Vala or C. The long-term plan is to re-write the entire desktop in Vala. Currently it has a window manager, panel. session-handler and run-dialog. And it already looks very beautiful as the image above shows.

Update

To install Budgie on Ubuntu 15.10 and 16.04, run:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:budgie-remix/ppa
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt install budgie-desktop

Earlier procedure

  1. To install the relatively stable version (but still in early development phase):
    $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:evolve-os/ppa

    OR, to install the bleeding edge (very very risky):

    $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sukso96100/budgie-desktop
  2. After adding the repo of your choice, run the following:
    $ sudo apt-get update
    $ sudo apt-get install budgie-desktop

There are some known issues:

  1. The Ubuntu theme or setup can affect the usability of the budgie-panel. If you have focus/usability issues with the panel (i.e. not taking input), disable overlay scrollbars by running below command in a terminal window:
    $ gsettings set com.canonical.desktop.interface scrollbar-mode normal
  2. Common desktop environment stuff like network/volume management, notifications not available yet. You can quit the session from the terminal using
    $ gnome-session-quit
