Variety: versatile Linux wallpaper manager

If the stock wallpaper changer does not meet your needs, Variety will. When it comes to managing wallpapers, I haven’t come across any other Linux app that features so many ways to fine-tune your desktop’s look and feel. A few of them:

  • Many wallpaper sources, both local and web
  • Downloads and changes the wallpaper with time
  • Set effects like grayscale, pencil sketch, oil painting etc. Variety uses¬†ImageMagick.
  • Set dynamic background colour
  • Show quotes from multiple web sources and a beautiful clock on desktop
  • Share your favourite wallpapers on Facebook
  • Scroll on indicator icon to change wallpapers
  • Use your own search keys to download new wallpapers

I have tested this awesome app on the Unity and LXDE desktop environments. Works seamlessly. To install on Ubuntu:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:peterlevi/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install variety
